Contextual Effects on the Plot of Go Ask Alice - Violet

Image
Go Ask Alice is a book published in 1971 that was structured and framed as the diary of a teenage girl. It follows her story as she begins to try different drugs. She starts off “normal,” but later meets the wrong people and participates in all sorts of dangerous activities. She gets depressed and goes through many struggles that result from her actions. Later, after the book became popular, it was found out that it wasn’t actually based on a real diary, and that Mormon youth counselor and author Beatrice Sparks made it up to try to scare teens away from drugs. The structure, time period, and author’s intentions all play different roles in how Go Ask Alice is portrayed.       First off, the structure is very important to how the book is read and comes across. I find this to be one of the most compelling aspects of it because it’s very convincing. You would definitely believe it was a real diary. The main character’s thoughts are random and sometimes not connect...

Do They Both Die at The End?

By: Citlali      They Both Die at The End is a really bitter book. Based on the title, you may think you know what is going to happen. Of course, titles don't always tell the truth. The real question is whether this one does.      Rufus and Mateo are complete strangers who each get a notification that they are going to die in the next day from Death-Cast, an organization that does exactly that. After getting his notification, Mateo just starts to give up on everything and it makes you think about how many other people in the world did the same after getting their call from Death-Cast. Rufus, however, does the opposite. He tries to explore the world with all the time he thinks he has left, and in doing so, he changes Mateo greatly. They practically switch their outlooks on life wit...

I learned to win friends and influence people with this book!

Personally, I think people suck. From what I’ve seen, most people in this world are annoying and I would rather be by myself. But unfortunately, that’s not how the world works. We all crave some type of connections with human beings. But how do we get that exactly? That’s what I hoped to gain by reading Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends and Influence People .  The first thing I learned seemed like common sense, but I never really put it into perspective. This book reminded me that “criticism is futile because it puts people on the defensive and usually makes them strive to justify themselves. Criticism is dangerous because it wounds a person’s precious pride, hurts their s...
