Are School Dress Codes a Good Idea?

Are School Dress Codes a Good Idea?      Dress codes are an extremely controversial topic. All sides pose good arguments, but I believe strict dress codes cause more harm than good. They can be really restrictive when talking about students' individuality, not to mention the old-fashioned, sexist way of thinking a lot have (Sherwin). While there are some instances of good dress codes, they aren't always implemented in the best way or have flaws.     Some dress codes carry old views that aren't as popular or widespread anymore, but somehow they have not been revised. School dress codes might have rules that are targeted to specific demographics such as Black students and students who identify as girls (Sherwin), which is not at all something that should be happening. Instead, rules should be the same for everyone or it isn't fair to the people who are being targeted.     Dress codes also can be really dif...

Can You Separate the Art From the Artist? - Violet

Can You Separate the Art From the Artist?  Just like anyone else who listens to music often, I’ve come across a good amount of problematic artists. Whether or not to separate the art from the artist is a critical choice that we, as consumers, have to make. Some people think the solution is to boycott the artist entirely and refuse to even talk about them in order to take away their platform. I’d like to take a look at a particular case to get a better understanding of situations like this.  First of all, the band that got me going down this rabbit hole in the first place was McCafferty. I was really starting to like them, so I looked them up when I got curious about background information and other fans. Upon doing so, I found many posts talking about how the lead singer, Nick Hartkop, was ex...

Are Teens Mental Health in a State of Crisis?

Image
Have you noticed how mental health is being talked about more in recent generations? That’s because of how stigmatized mental health used to be in older generations. Depression used to be defined as being lazy and anxiety was just nervousness. As times have changed, so is our perception on mental health. Psychologists have discovered that mental health can be detrimental to a person's physical health. For example, depression can cause headaches, fatigue and digestive problems while anxiety can cause insomnia and difficulty concentrating. Mental health also plays a huge role in suicide rates. Mental health is nothing new but it is clear, it is more prominent in teenagers these days. Poor mental health in teenagers is a problem that needs to be taken seriously.  Adolescence is a time for people to grow a foundation for a healthy life and time for their personalities to blossom. Unfortunately, “The number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing.” This can be evi...
