An Analysis of Adam in Shatter Me

Image
*SPOILER WARNING*           I am currently reading the book Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. This book is written from the perspective of the protagonist Juliette who has this unexplained "problem" or in some eyes "gift" that causes her to torture anyone she touches. After she accidentally killed a little boy with this "problem", she was isolated in an asylum for almost a year. That was until Warner sent her a companion (Adam, who knows her from elementary school) to study her and eventually bring her to him. Warner hopes for Juliette to help him win the war they are currently in; as a torturer. Juliette and Adam escape from Warner and are about to run away together. From the view of someone who is a little over halfway through the book, here are my current thoughts and concerns about the character Adam.     At my place in the book, Adam and Juliette  have just escaped out of Juliette's window to the old nuclear power plant, and are in the t...

Why Looking for Alaska is Such a Good Book

Image
TW: mentions of suicide      Looking for Alaska is a fantastic book by John Green. It uses many different unique story aspects to engage the reader and portray what is happening. To summarize, a high school student named Miles decides to leave his current school to attend a boarding school far from home. He meets his roommate, Chip and befriends him, quickly becoming comfortable with Chip’s whole friend group. He also meets Alaska, a girl he’s infatuated with despite the fact that she has a boyfriend. Halfway through the book, Alaska drives away from campus drunk in the middle of the night claiming to have forgotten something. She never returns. The rest of the book details Miles and Chip investigating her death and trying to figure out how and why it happened.      I really love the use of major character death in this novel. I think it’s executed very well and it’s quite moving to see the feeling that Alaska’s friends go through after her death. ...

How Young is Too Young to Use Social Media? (By Violet)

Many parents struggle to make decisions about when to allow their children to join social media platforms. There are a lot of different reasons a parent might or might not want to introduce their children to social media too early. It’s important to consider all of these factors when considering what to do. I would like to analyze these possible contributors to the decisions of parents and decide what I think the logical conclusion is. According to Source 1, around one third of children ages 7-9 use social media. This may sound shocking to some parents, but completely okay to others. Every household has different levels of concern and expectations.      There are many reasons why parents might feel pressured to allow their kids online. Oftentimes, kids want to use these platforms to connect with family and friends. Social media can be crucial for some children to not feel isolated from people they don’t get to see often. Many of them rely on it as a l...

Do you think gender is binary?

Image
By: Kade If someone asked you ‘What is the difference between sex and gender?’ you would probably be shocked that there is a difference. We’ve been taught that there are only two genders our whole lives. It’s hard to believe the new media discovering all these confusing ways people represent themselves. But, if we take the time to learn about the definitions of these things that have been around for hundreds of years, we can broaden our horizons and be more accepting of people. First, let's define sex and gender. Sex “ refers to the anatomical and other biological differences between females and males that are determined at the moment of conception and develop in the womb…( Sociology, Understanding Sex and Gender, 11.1) ” While gender “ is a social concept. It refers to the social and cultural differences a society assigns to people based on their (biological) sex.( Sociology, Understanding Sex and Gender, 11.1) ” Many people deny the fact that gender is different from sex. The...

The Way I Read People

Image
By: Kade      Learning about psychology is a process I've been wanting tackle since I started 5th grade. The way different people react to different situations based on their past is fascinating. In the story I read, "Read People Like a Book" I learned that there are many different ways to read people. Body language usually speaks louder than words. Being able to read the vibe of people can give you an insight into what a person might be feeling/what they might not be telling you. If someone is blinking rapidly or their behavior seems suspicious, they might be hiding something. But you also have to keep in mind what their "normal" is and the context of the situation. Maybe the person has a test soon and their is because of nerves. Reading people is never gonna be right 100% of the time. It will just help you get a clue on what someone is like.      It's also good to take in the account that one clue is never enough. You shouldn't make ju...
